Grandpa Core?

From Y2K, to indie sleaze, mom jeans, and trench coats buttoned to the top. My favorite trend or style, or even core, is the Grandpa x Fisherman vibe. I think that would be the proper way to say that. If you follow me on any of my socials, you would know my clothing is loose, navy blues, and there is a relaxed and cozy vibe to it all. It’s just my preference, but today we are going to get more in depth in curating a closet based around this so-called grandpa core. If you enjoy dressing with style, ease, and if you get cold easily, this vibe might be right up your alley.

When I say “Grandpa” I don’t mean, your average old man. I’m referencing the adorable old guys that dress with color, they have years of fun socks collected, they love the color yellow. I have curated a perfect Pinterest board to describe this. If you’re interested in checking it out, my Pinterest is clairrretheis, but no pressure to take a peek, I can give you all the details here. Going backwards to those fun socks I was talking about, we’re going to start off by talking about the fun accessories that make this style flow. This includes socks, scarves, hats, and your shoes. To start with socks and scarves, you need to find a color palette. Do you love blues or yellow? Pinks and oranges? What is your go to favorite color to wear. Now that you have this decided, go buy a million pairs of socks with fun designs that match that color. You have a red sweater you want to wear? Okay, go buy five different pairs of socks to go with it. I know it sounds silly, but seriously when people can see your socks, you are going to want them to be a statement, something someone might compliment you on. You might be wondering, who is going to compliment you on socks? But when it flows with the rest of your outfit, all of you is going to be complimented. Next fuzzy item you should be wearing that involves colors and/or patterns is going to be a scarf. Oh yeah, we are most certainly bringing scarves back, but I honestly don’t think they were ever gone. Anyways, your scarf should never be dull, just like a first date. I laughed at that. So, with all of that being said, how do you style a scarf? First of all, I personally would not choose a color that is the same color of whatever you are wearing, just because it’ll add more pop, and you know it. When I scroll through Pinterest and look at the scarves that these old men are wearing, I see a lot of thin ones. The ones that Bridget Jones was wearing, those ruffled, British lady ones. And a lot of them are striped. Going back to the whole color palette thing, it should be based around what you wear often, but there is already one you’ll see a lot of. It consists of browns, yellows, blues, and greens. Now, with that being said, these colors have several shades which you can choose from. When I wear yellow, you won’t catch me in mustard, but more of a How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days dress yellow. Okay, so now we’ve talked about the fun socks of different patterns, colors, and designs you should be wearing, a long with the fuzzy, striped scarves you should throw on top of your sweater, or even get crazy and wear it with a t-shirt, let’s talk about hats. Holy hats. Old men love them. Grandpas love them, and my favorite… fishermen love them. There is not just one hat that you can wear, but several different styles. Well, like three. You have the fisherman cap, the snapback with a rope, and a bucket hat. Not a tight, 2018 type of bucket hat with butterflies on it, but a loose bucket hat. Please never bring butterflies on clothes back again… Let’s start with the fisherman cap, If you look at the ones that Brixton has, that is exactly what I’m talking about, Kind of European, and made of wool. It brings a level of class that is unmatched compared to any other accessory. It is so cute, and this is the one thing I would keep to minimal color. Maybe a navy blue at the most, but I think these look best in gray or tan. This way you can throw it on when the top of your head is looking a little greasy. It’s a hat that doesn’t require any specific kind of outfit because you could literally wear it with a hoodie. It is the most perfect accessory that is suit to any vibe. Next hat is that snapback hat with a rope. These scream east coast in my opinion. I truly do think this can be bought in any color and whatever logo is on the front better look a little vintage. Even if it isn’t vintage, finding one with a brewery, mechanic, or fly shop is preferred. I’m not sure why the ones with ropes are so special, but I swear these are the most stylish ones to have in your closet. The ones I’ve realized I lean towards more are within the colors red, blue, and… yeah just those two. But I have seen the most adorable green ones all over my feed recently. The last hat, is the bucket hat. Now, I swear if I see the 2018-esque ones, I will crawl into a hole. I am talking about owning maybe one, tan bucket hat that is loose on your head and is worn with a loosely fitted jacket. Okay, enough hat talk. The last thing I’ll say is you need a good array of hats to find finish the fisherman look. Find one that suits your head. Seriously. Lastly, let’s talk shoes. My favorite topic. If you don’t own a pair of loafers that you can slide on, leave this page now and go buy a pair. Your shoes should fit into a neutral color palette. With all of the colors the rest of your outfit should be holding, let’s keep those shoes brown. Or black. Back to the style of shoe, I recommend loafers or rain boots. And if you do go the rain boots route, I take back my last statement, wear the brightest color you can find. You can wear some rain boots with shorts, under jeans, over jeans, skinny jeans, loose skirts, literally anything, but the same goes for those loafers in your cart… And don’t be worried matching them with all of those socks you just bought, it is so cute! I don’t see it often, but some funky socks make your outfit so much more unique when they are worn with little loafers.

Sorry I rambled so much about the shoes, socks, scarves, and hats you should be wearing, let’s dive into the base of the outfit. The actual outfit. Or I guess not the whole thing, but just the basics. The basics are the easiest thing to acquire, if you scroll through my pins, you’ll see a lot of the same things. A couple of blazers, some good fitting jeans, a lot of button ups, and chunky sweaters. A major component to this style is layering. My favorite thing is a good, striped button up. They are the cutest things ever, and can be worn with anything you’d like to wear. Let me place this image in your mind. A white button up with a chunky sweater that has fish covering the front, then some loose trousers, maybe gray. Once all of that’s on, you lift your pants up over the ankles and see these striped blue and orange socks, and the foot of them are being covered by a classic pair of brown loafers. Oh, it’s raining outside? Great thing you have that beanie that is the same color, different shade of that sweater you're wearing. I hope that put a good outfit in your mind, because this is the vibe. I don’t know how else to explain this! The whole concept is layers, layers, layers, loose button ups, pants that (to be frank) don’t really flatter your ass that much. Nobody can tell what size your thighs are, not in a bad way… Anyways, if more information is needed, I will tell you to maybe invest in a sweater vest, or a button up vest to match with a plain white under top.

I hope this gave you everything you need to start shopping. Love, your classic grandfather dressing gal.
