Statement Pieces: Without the Micro Trends

Partnered with @natalieandaddy through Tik Tok

Today, we’re discussing the necessary use of statement pieces, but let’s keep them classy. These accessories are meant to be timeless and be worn out to an event 20 years after purchasing it (and a few times in between), but a lot of the statement pieces we see on our feed are going to be based around the latest micro trend. This includes bows, eight balls, and too much jewelry. Versus the timeless statement pieces are going to be a pair of bold sunglasses, a few bold rings with some classy earrings, even a trench coat can be labeled as a statement piece. So, let’s dive into what you should be buying for that bold section in your wardrobe, and maybe what isn’t worth the $100.

I also want to start by saying how excited I am to be collating with @natalieandaddy’s Tik Tok page! If you’re coming from my profile and blog, then you will love their videos. If you’re coming from theirs… I hope you love what you read and stick around! XOXO.

Now, obviously your wardrobe is very suit to your personality. If you fell in love with the bow trend and want to continue it on, nobody will take a second look to judge because they’re cute! But, when it comes down to statement pieces I like to label them as something people would take a second look at, and then compliment. Also a piece that could be signature to you. If you love jewelry, people may realize you have one gorgeous ring on at all times, and it isn’t the average ring. It stands out, without clashing with any of your of clothing. There are so many different sections that statement pieces can fall into, and that’s what we’re here to cover. Your statement piece can be a jacket, jewelry, a scarf, and even a headband, or a bold pair of shoes.

Is your statement piece a jacket? Is it that one trench coat that you thrifted two years ago, and has never gone out of style? Like I previously stated, a statement piece should be bold. So, if you’re looking to make that bold statement with what keeps you warm make sure it’s good quality. A few classic places to find that piece could be at GAP, Banana Republic, and Revolve. The places I’ve listed are all relatively affordable, and they know how to keep it classic. Just because it’s a one in a million jacket doesn’t mean it has to be bright pink. It could be a fur brown coat, or a classic leather button up. Check out the stores I’ve listed above to find a couple of the perfect fits for you. A statement jacket that always makes me turn an eye is a brown faux leather zip up. I feel like since you would be wearing this jacket with several different outfits, you want it to be suitable to multiple colors, so keep it in the neutrals, but spice up the material. I mean, look at Blair and Serena’s prom night, they both wear long, black, trench coats with extravagant gowns. The jackets were classic, attractive, and timeless.

My favorite option out of the several statement pieces you can pick is jewelry. I know I said that one too many pieces can be a bit “micro trend” of you, but if you pick the right pieces, you don’t have to wear a ring on each finger. Quality jewelry is hard to find. You see so many ads for cheap jewelry online, but wasn’t that the website that turned your sisters finger green? Yeah… I love to find my statement jewelry pieces at markets and crystal shops. I know the crystal shop one seems odd, but you can find so many pieces of sterling silver with the most perfect cut gem in the center there. So, how much is too much? I believe that despite my love for covering your wrists in bracelets and your hands in rings, if your jewelry gets caught on something every few moves, it’s too much. Your statement jewelry piece should be the center of your outfit, yes, but if you have 4 different bracelets to choose from, then which one is the statement piece anyways? I recommend large rings, one or two. I’m talking a ring then starts at the base of your finger and goes up to the knuckle. Maybe the in between space is a ruby, or some sort of flower. If you’re looking for a statement bracelet, I feel a classy watch is always right. I mean, there are so many to choose from. You can go with a colored band, maybe the clock has a font you love. If you live here in San Diego, on Wednesdays, the O.B. Market has the best watches. Pick a watch that makes people grab your hand and go “Wow, this is fabulous.” If you don’t do that to the watch you’re looking at buying, don’t buy it. Necklaces. This is a difficult piece to pick out because it all depends on your style, right? I mean, some people love the classic. Just one necklace with a sweet pendant, but if I’m going to be honest, that’s not a statement piece. If you want to draw attention to your neck, you need to layer, but layer properly. You want to look at maybe 3 or 4 different length necklaces. They could all be the classic pendant one, or maybe one can have a long piece down the center. If you need inspiration look up statement necklaces on Pinterest and you’ll see what I mean. The necklaces that draw attention to, well the necklace, are going to be ones that are full of color, maybe on the chunkier side, maybe one with a thicker band. The options are endless with your statement necklace, but I recommend one of two things. Go chunky or go with more than one. Lastly, earrings. It’s difficult to make earrings a statement piece since they get covered by your hair most of the time, but if you happen to be doing a slick back. I would go with more of a chunky look, but less. It doesn’t take away from the clothing you’re wearing, it probably adds to it if you are keeping it simple with a gold or silver option. I personally wear one pair of silver earrings, they are hoops, but chunkier, and don’t fall far from the lobe. If that makes any sense, I got them from the GAP (once again), and they truly go with every outfit. While adding something to the upper portion of my neck. It gives my face just a classier look. It’s like adding some sparkle to your ears, it moves to your eyes, then teeth! A good pair of chunky, simple earrings goes a long way.

I am going to throw scarf and headband into the same category. Mostly because I believe the headband can only be used as a statement piece if you wear one nearly everyday. To make a headband your statement piece, you would have to buy multiple different colors and match it your outfits. You don’t often see people wearing headbands anymore I feel, a lot of people replace them with sunglasses, which is also an amazing statement piece. Using sunglasses as a statement piece is not only adorable, but smart. You’ve always got a way to block out the sun… Anyways, for headbands and sunglasses, I would recommend keeping them colorful. I mean a grey headband wouldn’t be that far off from someone’s hair color, and brown sunglasses are, let’s be real. Boring. Dive into the fun color palette here, this includes blue, orange, green, and so on. For your statement scarf, there are two routes you can take. There is the thinner 90’s inspired route, or the chunky ACNE Studio (more modern) route. To start with the 90’s inspired scarf, I would recommend using them like Bridget Jones. Keep it colorful, and not just one color. Add some stripes, but stay away from polka dots. If you go with a a beige statement jacket, the pinks and oranges would get along well with that. If you have a black jacket, maybe keep it in the blue color scheme. Moral of the story: Keep the thin scarf colorful and fun. Scarves are supposed to be fun and flow. For an ACNE Studio inspired scarf, well. This is the definition of a statement piece. It will draw attention to itself, and nothing else. I would recommend picking a color that goes with the color that is most worn in your closet. I don’t think choosing blue, if all of your clothes are blue is smart, you want it to match, not be a groutfit (if grey was your color).

Shoes, shoes, shoes. Everyone loves shopping for shoes right? Shoes aren’t just accessories- they’re statements (whether you want them to be or not). They force you to walk a certain way, and you have to find a pair that matches what you’ve already put on. A lot of the time, you need a lot of them. They’re declarations of who you are, or at least, who you want to be on any given day. A pair of towering heels or sleek boots can transform an ordinary moment into something extraordinary. They’re the punctuation at the end of your outfit’s sentence, the little piece of rebellion that completes the story. And if your shoes are making a statement, everyone is listening.

Now that we’ve discussed all of the ways you can make your favorite part of an outfit a statement, you get to pick. I hope you have fun, and remember, your closet is YOURS! So, make every piece unique.
